What if you threw a leadership contest and nobody came?

From the Leader Post:

Ryan Bater will be the new leader of the provincial Liberal party after a contest that was over before it ever really began. At the 5 p.m. close of nominations on Friday, Bater was the only candidate, meaning he will be acclaimed as leader at the party's November convention.
Congratulations, I think :-)

At least he has a sense of perspective:

"As far as being negative though, people should be reminded that both Brad Wall and Roy Romanow were acclaimed as leaders of their parties and went on to lead their parties to success," he said of the current Saskatchewan Party premier and former NDP premier.

HA HA HA HA.

I know Roy Romanow sir, and you are no Roy Romanow.

You're not even a Brad Wall.

You see I actually do know Ryan Bater. And what I know is that he brings to the table not just energy and enthusiasm, but also integrity, intellect, and great instincts. I am proud to call Ryan a friend, and even prouder to now be able to call him the next Leader of the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan.

For those of us who believe that there should be a strong political voice in Saskatchewan fighting for economic, personal, and political freedoms, we are feeling quite optimistic about the future of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party. Clean slate, energetic young Leader, energetic young (and young at heart!) team - the foundation is all there now.

A leadership race would have been nice this time. What is more important is that Bater is saying the right stuff, and is on cue. If you reread the SP story, you will see what I mean.

You're right. Ryan's at least a foot taller than Brad, and a helluvalot smarter.

And unlike the opportunistic Roy Romanow, who philosophically is a left-leaning Liberal, Ryan's actually sticking with the party that he believes in, rather than joining one of the ones that has been courting him since before the last election.

And how much younger than each is he at his respective point in his career?

The Liberals need a leadership race but nobody can be blamed for the lack of activity. Though, those who step up in our democracy should be thanked no matter what political party. The leadership race would have given the Liberals some media attention that they need after a huge set back in the last election.

Roy is not an opportunist, he is a moderate NDPer and certainly could be called a left-wing Liberal but with Ross Thatcher leading the Liberals, Roy fit in with the NDP. Congrats to Ryan for running for a party that he believes in despite the fact he ran under Karwacki who ran the party to the left and now Bater wants to run the party to the right very much like the Saskatchewan Pary.

His age when becoming Leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal party is not an indication of being any better then Wall or Calvert.
