How much trouble are the Liberal in?

It's bad enough when you have this type of story:

The poll, conducted exclusively by Ipsos-Reid for CanWest News Service and Global Television after the Harper government delivered its new budget, shows the Tories have opened up an 11-point lead nationally over Stephane Dion's Liberals.

Grit support plunged to 29% from 34% in a survey conducted a week earlier.

Moreover, the poll indicates the Conservatives have opened up a 10-point lead (43% to 33%) over the Liberals in Ontario, the crown jewel of Canadian politics with 106 seats. They also are locked in a virtual tie with them in Quebec, 26%-25% for the Liberals. Quebec has 75 federal seats.

But what is even worse, is this, you never, ever want this type of story:

His zinger in turn provoked Liberal Leader Stephane Dion to charge that Mr. Harper was trying to bully him. It seemed a particularly feeble -- dare we say, whimpy -- accusation for a grown man to make.

Then don't follow it, Mr. Dion. Or do. Either way, stop whining like a child whose older brother just got a bigger lollypop. Act like a leader, or at least a grownup politician. Accept that in the cut-and-thrust of political jousting your opponents are going to make allegations against you and your party every bit as outsized as the ones you make against them.
Ouch! If this "whimpy" meme takes off then game over - it is Dion's "Mr. Dithers" tag.

Remember Joe Clark?

Maybe this is the reason why, Jason - head liberal smear campaigner - is once again doing gutter politics. It's where the liberals are heading. Kinda like the canary in the coal mine.

Well.. I'll point out the fact that this poll was done in the immediate budget aftermath (as was Strategic Council) and wasn't taken later in the week when the provincial leaders started complaining, and Charest did his tax cut with his share of the fiscal imbalance money, thus earning him and Harper more ire.

So.. I'd wait on other polls and pollsters taken a few days after the Budget to see whether public opinion follows that line of anger that surfaced.

Two points:

1) Canwest Global is a conservative media outlet... their polls can't be trusted. Example, taking the poll immediately after the budget release before there is time for people to make sense of it. Feels a lot like a premeditated decision in order to skew the results.

2) The Conservative attack ads are despicable. What kind of leader would allow and sanction this kind of school yard crap? Oh right... someone who admires George Bush and Rovian politics. Canadians will not accept this, it is not our way... just as the right wing evangelical movement in the US is not our way. It may be in rural Alberta, but believe me, in urban Ontario its considered laughable. I'm looking forward to a campaign of satire commercials making fun of the ignorance, arrogance and just plain stupidity of Mr. Harper and the Conservative Party.

I consider their little games to be thinly veiled attempts to deceive the Canadian public of their true extreme right-wing social agenda. Unfortunately, the tactics they engage in, tell a different story. It is clear as day, for anyone paying attention, that the social fabric of this nation will be destroyed if they are allowed a majority.

Mr. Harper - I invite you to join me on the hockey rink one day to see who is more manly in a truly Canadian way. I doubt you can even skate let alone play or fight on skates. If you do take me up on it, be sure to bring a large pair of pliers because I'm going to shove my goalie stick so far up your ass you'll be spitting out hockey tape...

Fair enough - it's just one poll. But the trend lines in the last few months of polling arn't looking good for the Libs is all I am saying
